Apple’s new Apple
Intelligence platform (introduced in iOS 18) embeds generative AI across iPhone,
iPad, and Mac. It uses on-device foundation models (≈3B parameters) and larger server models
(via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute) to power
features like Writing Tools, notification summaries,
Genmoji, Image Playground, and Siri enhancementsmacrumors.commachinelearning.apple.com.
At WWDC 2025 (June 9–13), Apple is expected to unveil iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 with
expanded Apple Intelligence. In particular, Apple is opening its AI models to third-party developers: iOS 19 will ship a
new SDK allowing apps to call Apple’s LLMs (the same models behind Apple Intelligence
features)macrumors.comreuters.com.
Initially this will focus on smaller on-device models
rather than large cloud LLMsmacrumors.comreuters.com.
Apple hopes that allowing developers to integrate features like notification summarization,
auto-writing tools, and image editing will spur creative new apps and broaden adoptionmacrumors.comreuters.com.
(Previously, third-party apps had to use external AI services; opening Apple’s models will let
iOS apps natively leverage Siri-like intelligence.)
Apple’s Siri assistant is being overhauled. Bloomberg reports that Apple is
developing a next-generation Siri built entirely on an LLM “monolithic” engine, replacing its
legacy hybrid systemmacrumors.com.
During testing, this Siri “chatbot” reportedly matched recent ChatGPT versions in understanding
and context handlingmacrumors.com.
The refreshed Siri will support multi-turn conversations and web queries, and will be able to
perform complex tasks like finding and acting on information across apps. For example, Siri will
soon let users type queries or switch
seamlessly between voice and text, and it can maintain context to do things like “Bring up that
article” or “Send those photos” without extra detailapple.commacrumors.com.
(In short, Apple Intelligence+Siri aims to become a “ChatGPT-like” assistant integrated
throughout iOS/macOS.)
Apple’s redesigned Siri interface (iOS 18) lets
users type or speak instructions on the lock screen. New Apple Intelligence features (e.g.
“Ask Siri…”) will be deeply integrated into iOS 19 and beyondapple.com.
Apple’s hardware is evolving to meet these AI demands. In March 2025 Apple
launched new MacBook Air models powered by the M4
chip, which add specialized AI functions while reducing cost by ~$100reuters.com.
The M4 Air still targets thin-and-light laptops (13″ and 15″), but its neural engine and ISP
enable on-device features like improved image editing and on-the-fly transcription. Apple also
unveiled M3 Ultra and M4 Max chips for high-end Mac Studio machines:
these systems can run very large models locally (Apple says >600 billion parameters) by

Looking ahead, Bloomberg reports that Apple is already designing future chips (codenamed Komodo/Borneo) for M6/M7 Mac chips and even entirely new server-class chips (Baltra) devoted to
Apple Intelligencemacrumors.com.
These Baltra chips (due ~2027) will sit in Apple datacenters and handle heavier AI inference
while keeping user data encrypted and private. Apple is also prototyping AI sensors – chips for upcoming smart glasses,
headphones, and watches with cameras and local AI processingmacrumors.com.
In short, Apple’s silicon strategy is to distribute AI workloads: lightweight tasks run
on-device (iPhone/A-series, M-series chips), while demanding queries can overflow to Apple’s own
cloud servers (all running Apple silicon for end-to-end privacy).
Apple & OpenAI: GPT-4o Integration
Apple has publicly partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT/GPT-4o into its ecosystem. Starting in iOS
18/iPadOS 18, users can invoke ChatGPT-based tools (powered by GPT-4o) from inside Apple’s apps
– for example as part of the new system Writing
Tools for composing emails or documents, and via Siri on-demand. Apple announced that
“ChatGPT integration, powered by GPT-4o” would be
available in iOS 18 and macOS, letting users access ChatGPT free or connect their accountsapple.com.
In practice, Apple Intelligence can pull from ChatGPT for tasks like crafting replies or
analyzing images. A Reuters report confirms this: Apple Intelligence now includes “features with
access to ChatGPT,” allowing tasks like rewriting emails and summarizing notificationsreuters.com.
Importantly, Apple and OpenAI emphasize privacy: requests sent to ChatGPT are stripped of
identifying data and not logged by OpenAIopenai.comapple.com.
The net effect is that Apple gets best-of-breed LLM capability quickly, while investing heavily
in its own models for the future.
Privacy and User Experience
Apple’s competitive pitch centers on privacy and seamless UX.
Most Apple Intelligence models run fully
on-device, and Apple’s Private Cloud
Compute ensures that even cloud-assisted tasks are end-to-end encrypted. In Apple’s
terms, Siri and AI features combine “personal context” with strong privacy safeguards, so that
“data is never retained or exposed” outside the user’s deviceapple.com.
(Apple allows independent verification of its cloud model code and logs to prove no user data is
storedapple.com.)
For users, this means AI-powered features – like message suggestions, photo editing, or
personalized Siri commands – are always context-aware (e.g. knowing who your friends are, what’s on your
calendar) but still protected. Apple Intelligence can, for instance, read your email subjects
on-device to surface “Priority Messages,” or suggest replies without sending your actual message
content to servers. The new Siri interface (shown above) also enhances usability: it offers
inline suggestions (like “Get directions home” or “Play Road Trip Classics”) and lets users
simply tap or type commands. In sum, Apple aims to deliver sophisticated assistant capabilities
while keeping user data under lock-and-key.
Competing Approaches
Apple’s privacy-first, on-device strategy contrasts with
rival approaches:
Google/Android
(Gemini Nano) – Google is integrating AI at multiple levels. The Pixel 9 rollout
introduced on-device features powered by Gemini
Nano, Google’s compact LLM. For example, a March 2025 Pixel software update added
real-time call and message scam detection
using Gemini Nano, warning users of fraud on-deviceblog.google.
Google’s Gemini 2.5 models (announced at
I/O 2025) underpin its assistants and developer tools, and Android will allow apps to call
Gemini via cloud APIs. Google has also indicated that future Pixel/Android versions may use
Gemini as an alternative Siri/ChatGPT for voice queriesmacrumors.com.
In practice, Samsung (below) currently uses Google’s Gemini on its phones by default. Unlike
Apple, Google generally leans on cloud infrastructure for heavier AI tasks, but Gemini Nano
shows its commitment to edge AI with privacy (no audio or text leaves the phone for scam

Google’s Pixel interface now includes AI
features like on-device “Scam Detection” (shown) powered by Gemini Nano. This feature scans
text/call content locally to flag fraud, illustrating Google’s approach of integrating AI

Samsung/Android
(Gauss) – Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25 series debuted in early 2025 emphasizing
AI features (Real-time translation, background blur, etc.). These devices use Qualcomm chips and default to Google’s Gemini

However, Samsung has separately developed its own generative AI called Gauss (language, code, and image models) for
internal usedeveloper.samsung.com.
Samsung has hinted that future Galaxy devices and appliances will natively host Gauss-based
assistants. For now, Samsung’s strategy seems hybrid: it leverages Google’s LLMs (Gemini)
for out-of-the-box AI, while quietly preparing its in-house models for Galaxy ecosystem AI
(e.g. in smart TVs, phones, appliances).
Meta
– Meta has bet on a social/voice-driven assistant. In April 2025, Meta launched a standalone
Meta AI app (built on Llama 4) as a
personal conversational assistantabout.fb.com.
This app (and an accompanying API at meta.ai) lets users chat by voice or text and “it gets
to know your preferences, remembers context”about.fb.com.
Meta also integrates AI into its social apps (image/video editing, story suggestions) and AR
devices (Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with an AI companion). Unlike Apple’s privacy focus,
Meta’s models draw on vast user data (social graphs, content) to personalize responses. Mark
Zuckerberg has positioned 2025 as “the year when a highly intelligent personalized AI
assistant reaches a billion people” via Meta’s appsabout.fb.com.
In practice, Meta’s Llama-based assistant competes with Apple’s Siri+ChatGPT (on iOS) and
Google Assistant/Gemini on Android, but operates in its own ecosystem.
In summary, Apple’s approach is privacy-first, on-device, whereas Google and Meta emphasize
cloud-scale models with broad data access, and Samsung currently mixes cloud AI with plans for
in-house models. Each strategy has trade-offs: Apple may lag in raw model capability (so far)
but wins trust and offline functionality; Google/Meta can deploy cutting-edge LLMs quickly (e.g.
Gemini, Llama 4) but must manage user data concerns.
Technical and Business Implications
Hardware
& Performance: On-device AI drives rapid innovation in chips and sensors.
Apple’s Neural Engine and ISP are being tuned for AI inference, and its M‑series chips now
include tens of billions of transistors dedicated to neural computereuters.comreuters.com.
Qualcomm and Google are similarly enhancing mobile SoCs (e.g. Snapdragon with Hexagon NPUs,
Pixel’s custom Titan M2). The need to run large models locally is pushing memory and power
budgets up: Apple’s new Mac Studio (M3 Ultra) can have 96 GB RAM to run 600B-parameter

In the near future, specialized accelerators (like Apple’s AI server chips) will further
raise the compute ceiling for AI on-device.
User
Platforms: Consumers will see AI as a platform war. Phones and laptops will
increasingly advertise “AI” as a key feature (e.g. “Gemini”, “Apple Intelligence”, “Galaxy
AI”). AI capabilities may soon become a baseline expectation (automatic summarization,
real-time translation, advanced photo editing). Wearables and personal gadgets will follow:

Effects: Opening Apple’s AI models to developers (in iOS 19) could spark a new
generation of AI-driven apps. Developers will no longer need to license third-party models
like OpenAI or Anthropic if Apple’s built-ins suffice. This might deepen the iOS ecosystem,
but also raises questions about App Store policies (will apps be charged for using Apple’s
AI?). For Google/Android, strong AI features may further differentiate Pixel/Galaxy flagship
devices (as Samsung touts on-device call translation and Bixby improvements). For Meta, a
thriving AI assistant increases engagement on its platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, etc.),
potentially driving ad revenue.
Market and
Privacy: On-device AI could reshape market competition. Apple’s privacy branding
may allow it to charge a premium (much like it did for FaceID, on-device Maps routing,
etc.). Reports already suggest that “AI PCs” (like new MacBook Air) are stimulating consumer
demandreuters.com.
At the same time, Apple’s reliance on proprietary silicon and closed models means it must
carefully manage costs and regulatory scrutiny (e.g. recent UK/EU digital regulations).
Meanwhile, Google and Samsung will leverage partnerships (Google-Samsung alignment) and open
Android policies. Overall, the AI-capable
device market is accelerating: devices with any credible AI assistant are
commanding attention, and chipmakers (TSMC, Samsung Foundry) are investing heavily to meet
the demand.
In conclusion, Apple Intelligence after WWDC 2025 is set to
emphasize seamless, privacy-preserving AI across all
its platforms, fueled by Apple silicon and partnerships (GPT-4o). The coming year
will test whether Apple’s relatively closed, hardware-driven strategy can keep pace with
competitors’ cloud-based innovation. For investors and builders, the key questions will be: Can
Apple ship these AI upgrades stably and compellingly? Will developers and users adopt Apple’s
on-device models? And how will the tug-of-war between privacy and performance play out in this
new generative-AI era? The next few months (iOS 19 betas, new hardware launches) will provide
